NY Universal Symbol

The NY Universal Symbol is the warning mark the Office of Cannabis Management requires on every legal adult-use cannabis product. It combines a yellow "THC!" triangle, a red 21+ circle, and the New York State logo, signaling at a glance that a package holds a regulated, age-restricted cannabis product.

What the NY Universal Symbol is

The NY Universal Symbol is a standardized warning mark created by the Office of Cannabis Management under the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA). It tells anyone who picks up a package that the contents are regulated adult-use cannabis with THC inside, meant only for adults 21 and older. OCM publishes the official artwork, so every licensed brand uses the same mark.

The three parts

  • ·THC warning: a bright yellow triangle with a black cannabis leaf and the letters "THC!"
  • ·Age restriction: a circle with a red border and "21+" in bold black type
  • ·State logo: the New York State logo identifying the product as part of the legal market

OCM offers the symbol in three layouts, horizontal, vertical, and square, so brands can fit it to different package shapes. The square version must be at least 1.25 inches tall; the horizontal and vertical versions have minimum dimensions of about half an inch. The colors and white background cannot be altered, except for adding an outline when needed to make the mark stand out.

Why it matters when you shop

The symbol is a fast trust check. If you see the OCM Universal Symbol on the outermost packaging, you are holding a product from a licensed New York operator that went through the state's tracking and testing rules. No symbol, or a faked one, is a red flag that the product may come from the unlicensed market, where there is no lab testing or accountability.

Where does the NY Universal Symbol have to appear?

It must sit on the outermost layer of packaging, either the retail package or the marketing layer if one is used. It needs strong color contrast so it stays clearly visible, and it cannot be hidden under text or stickers, used as a tamper seal, or placed on any part a customer would peel off.

Practical takeaway

When you buy at The Highline, look for the THC! triangle and the 21+ circle on the package before it leaves the store. It confirms the product is legal, tested, and meant for adults. Keep it sealed and out of reach of kids and pets at home. Effects may vary. Please consume responsibly.

FAQ · NY Universal Symbol

What is the yellow triangle with THC on cannabis packages?

That is part of the NY Universal Symbol. The yellow triangle holds a cannabis leaf and the letters THC!, warning that the package contains a psychoactive cannabis product. It is paired with a red 21+ circle and the New York State logo, all required by OCM.

Why does my cannabis product have a 21 plus symbol on it?

New York requires every legal adult-use cannabis product to carry the Universal Symbol, which includes a red bordered 21+ circle. It signals that cannabis is restricted to adults 21 and older and that the product came from a state-licensed source.

How do I know if cannabis is from a licensed New York store?

Look for the OCM Universal Symbol on the outer packaging, the THC! triangle, the 21+ circle, and the New York State logo. Licensed products also list lab and license information. Missing or altered symbols suggest the product is from the unlicensed market.
