More than a third of The Highline's regulars are over 55. This is not what most North American dispensary marketing predicts. It is, increasingly, what the data shows nationally, and it is overwhelmingly what walks through our door on a Wednesday morning at 11.
Why
Three reasons, in roughly the order our customers offer them:
- Sleep · falling asleep, staying asleep, less reliance on Z-drugs and Ambien.
- Pain · chronic lower-back pain, hip pain, neuropathy, post-surgical pain, managed with lower opioid exposure.
- Anxiety · social anxiety, situational anxiety, grief, low-grade chronic worry.
Many of our senior customers have not used cannabis since the 1970s, and the cannabis available then was almost nothing like what is on a NY-licensed shelf in 2026. THC potency, formats, lab testing, dosing precision, all completely different.
How we run the consultation
Slower. We block out 20–30 minutes for first-visit senior consultations on weekday mornings. We ask about medications, cannabis interacts with many. We dose conservatively, almost always edibles at 2–2.5 mg THC to start, or a 1:1 CBD:THC tincture for the first two weeks. We pair products with the explicit goal, not the marketing.
Format choices we tend to recommend
For sleep
A CBN-forward indica-leaning edible at 2.5–5 mg THC, taken 60–90 minutes before bed. Or a 1:1 CBD:THC tincture at the same time. We rarely recommend inhalation for sleep. The duration is too short to carry through the night.
For pain
A 1:1 CBD:THC tincture taken daily, often building over two weeks to a steady dose. Topicals (cream, balm, roll-on) for joint-localized pain, non-intoxicating, applied directly. For breakthrough pain, low-dose edibles or a low-potency vape.
For anxiety
Low and slow. Often a high-CBD, low-THC tincture. Avoiding high-THC inhalation (which can paradoxically increase anxiety) and avoiding edibles above 5 mg for the first month.
Cannabis for seniors is mostly about doing less than you think you should, and giving it more time than you think you have.
What we won't do
We will not recommend product to replace prescribed medication. We will not recommend high-THC product as a first-time experience. We will not rush a senior consultation to clear a line. The customers who come back twice a week are the customers who got 25 minutes the first time, not the customers we processed in five.
