How to keep cannabis fresh.

Light, heat, air, and humidity are what turn good flower stale. Here is how to beat all four.

Fresh cannabis comes down to four enemies: light, heat, air, and the wrong humidity. Control those and good flower stays good for a year or more. Get them wrong and a beautiful jar turns dry, harsh, and flat in a few weeks. The short version: keep flower in airtight glass, in the dark, at room temperature, with a two-way humidity pack holding the jar near 58–62% relative humidity.

Why bother? Because terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give each cultivar its smell and character, are fragile and evaporate first. THC degrades too. Stored in the dark at room temperature, cannabis is reasonably stable for one to two years, but heat and light speed that clock up fast. This is about protecting what you paid for.

What actually makes cannabis go stale

Light is the single biggest factor in cannabinoid loss. UV breaks down THC faster than almost anything except extreme heat, which is why clear jars on a sunny shelf are a mistake. Oxygen is the second problem. Over time, exposure to air converts THC into CBN, a different compound often associated with a more sedating, less heady character. Heat accelerates everything and can dry out flower. And humidity cuts both ways: too dry and buds get brittle and harsh, too damp and you risk mold.

What is the best way to keep cannabis flower fresh?

Store flower in an airtight, opaque or UV-blocking glass jar, kept in a cool dark place around 60–70 °F, with a two-way humidity pack holding 58–62% relative humidity. Glass, darkness, a stable seal, and controlled moisture protect terpenes and slow THC breakdown. Keep it away from windows and heat.

Glass, humidity packs, and the dark

Glass is the standard for flower because it is airtight and does not hold odor or leach into the bud the way some plastics can. A jar with a tight seal and an opaque or UV-blocking finish covers light and air in one move. If your jar is clear, just keep it in a drawer or cabinet.

Two-way humidity packs are the easy button. They release or absorb moisture to hold a set level, usually 58% or 62%. Many people pick 62% for maximum terpene and aroma preservation, while some prefer 58% for a slightly drier, crisper smoke. Drop one in the jar, replace it when it turns stiff or crunchy, and you have removed most of the guesswork. Effects may vary. Please consume responsibly.

Storing edibles, vapes, and concentrates

Different formats want different handling. A few simple rules:

  • Edibles and gummies: keep them in their original airtight packaging in a cool, dark, dry spot. The fridge can make gummies sticky from condensation; for long-term storage, the freezer works better for baked goods than for gummies or chocolate.
  • Vape cartridges and disposables: store upright at moderate room temperature, away from sunlight and heat. Too cold can thicken the oil and clog, too hot can cause leaks. Skip the fridge.
  • Concentrates (rosin, live resin, badder): cool and dark is the rule. For longer holds, an airtight container in the fridge or freezer helps preserve terpenes, just let it return to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation.
  • Pre-rolls: treat them like flower. Airtight, dark, and a humidity pack nearby keeps them from drying into a harsh, fast burn.

Should you store cannabis in the fridge or freezer?

For flower, no. Cold makes trichomes brittle and condensation can cause mold, so a cool dark cabinet is better. The freezer suits long-term concentrate storage in airtight containers, and edibles do fine cool and dry. Vape cartridges should stay at room temperature, never refrigerated.

Glass, darkness, a good seal, and a humidity pack. That is ninety percent of keeping cannabis fresh.

A quick note on quantity and the law

Buy what you will use in a reasonable window so it never sits long enough to fade. New York also sets limits worth knowing. Under the MRTA, adults 21 and older may possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis flower or 24 grams of concentrate outside the home, and may keep up to 5 pounds at home. Storing more than the legal amount, or leaving it where a minor could reach it, is not worth the risk.

Most people are far better served by smaller, fresher amounts than a stockpile. If you want craft flower that tastes the way the grower intended, browse our menu at /order or ask a budtender at 45 Main Street in Hastings-on-Hudson which cultivars are freshest this week. We will tell you how to keep them that way.
