Walking into a licensed dispensary for the first time can feel like there are unwritten rules. There really are only a few, and they are easy. Bring a valid government ID, be ready to pay with cash or debit, and ask the person behind the counter as many questions as you want. That is most of it. The rest is just the same courtesy you would bring to any small shop on Main Street.
At The Highline, our counter sits a few blocks from the Hastings Metro-North station and the Old Croton Aqueduct trail. People stop in before a walk, after the train, or on the way home. You do not need to know strain names or read a label in advance. You just need to be 21 or older with ID in hand. We will take it from there.
Bring a valid ID, every single time
New York law requires licensed dispensaries to check ID for everyone, every visit. This is not optional and it is not personal. A budtender who waves you through could put the shop's license at risk. So expect to show ID at the door or at the register, even if you have been in before and even if you are clearly over 21.
A current driver's license, a state ID card, or a passport all work. An out-of-state license is fine too, so visitors taking the Hudson Line up for the day are welcome. Make sure it is unexpired. If the photo no longer looks like you, bring a backup. No valid ID means no entry, so keep it somewhere easy to reach.
Do I need to be a New York resident to buy cannabis here?
No. New York's adult-use program is open to any adult 21 or older with a valid, unexpired government ID, including out-of-state and international visitors. You do not need to be a state resident or hold a medical card. Just bring acceptable photo ID that proves you are at least 21.
Know how you are paying before you get to the register
Because cannabis is still federally illegal, most banks and credit-card networks stay out of the business. That shapes how you pay at the counter. Many dispensaries are cash-first, some take debit, and rules can change. The simplest move is to check our current payment options before you visit, or just bring cash.
- Cash is always accepted and keeps checkout quick
- Debit may be available, sometimes with a small processing step
- Credit cards are usually not accepted anywhere in the industry
- An ATM is a common backup if you arrive short
Your budtender is the whole point. Use them
The best thing you can do is talk. A good budtender is not there to upsell you. They are there to match you to something that fits. The most useful thing you can say is not a strain name. It is a sentence about what you want, your experience level, and your budget. Try: "I am newer to this, I want to feel relaxed but still functional, and I am looking to spend around forty dollars."
From there we can walk you through format, potency, and dose. We carry around forty craft cultivars from independent upstate growers, so there is range, and questions are genuinely welcome. There is no such thing as a beginner question here. Effects may vary. Please consume responsibly.
Describe the experience you want, not a strain name. That is the single most useful thing you can say at the counter.
Should I tip my budtender?
Tipping is appreciated but never required. Many people leave a few dollars for a quick sale, or five to ten for a long, hands-on consultation. Cash tips are easiest given how the industry handles payments. If you cannot tip, that is completely fine. Good service is part of the visit either way.
A few small courtesies
Dispensaries are regulated retail spaces, and a little awareness keeps the room comfortable for everyone. Do not photograph or film other customers, and ask before taking pictures of the shop or products. Many people value their privacy here. Be patient if there is a consultation ahead of you, since you will want that same time when it is your turn.
- No photos or video of other customers, ever
- Ask staff before filming inside the store
- Have your questions and rough budget ready
- Step aside if you need a minute to decide
- Leave the product sealed until you are home
That is the whole etiquette: ID ready, cash or debit, questions encouraged, and a little respect for the people around you. When you are set, browse the live menu and reserve at /order, or just come in and tell a budtender what you are after. We deliver same-day to Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, and Northern Yonkers too, if you would rather skip the trip.
