Distillate

Distillate is a highly refined cannabis oil made by purifying an extract until it is mostly a single cannabinoid, often 90 to 99 percent THC or CBD. The refining process strips out plant fats, waxes, and terpenes, so it is nearly flavorless and odorless. It powers many vapes and edibles.

Also known as: Distill, THC distillate, CBD distillate, the clear

Type
Refined cannabinoid concentrate

Vapes, edibles, tinctures

What distillate is

Distillate is one of the most refined forms of cannabis oil on a dispensary shelf. Producers start with a crude extract, then purify it through several steps until almost everything except the target cannabinoid is gone. The result is a thick, golden, translucent oil that is mostly THC or mostly CBD, frequently testing in the 90 to 99 percent range. Because the refining removes plant fats, waxes, and the aromatic terpenes, plain distillate has little to no smell or taste.

How it is made

  • ·Extraction: cannabinoids are pulled from the plant with a solvent such as CO2, ethanol, or hydrocarbon, making a crude oil.
  • ·Winterization: the oil is chilled so fats and waxes solidify and get filtered out.
  • ·Decarboxylation: gentle heat converts THCA into active THC (or CBDA into CBD).
  • ·Distillation: under vacuum, the oil is heated so cannabinoids separate from remaining compounds, leaving the purified distillate.

Why it matters to a shopper

Distillate is prized for being potent, consistent, and easy to dose. Since it is already decarboxylated, it is active without extra heating, which is why it shows up in so many edibles, capsules, tinctures, and vape cartridges. The trade-off is flavor. Stripping terpenes makes it neutral, so some products add botanical or cannabis-derived terpenes back in for taste and aroma. Shoppers who want the fuller, plant-forward flavor and the entourage effect often look at live resin or full-spectrum options instead. Effects may vary. Please consume responsibly.

On a New York menu or label

At a licensed New York dispensary, distillate products list cannabinoid content as a percentage plus total milligrams per unit, since concentrates are taxed by THC content here. Every package carries the OCM universal symbol, a 21+ notice, and is backed by lab testing summarized on a Certificate of Analysis. Checking the COA confirms the potency and that the product passed contaminant screening.

Is distillate stronger than flower?

By cannabinoid percentage, yes. Flower usually tests in the teens to high twenties for THC, while distillate is often 90 percent or higher. That concentration means a little goes a long way. Start low and go slow, especially in edibles where onset is delayed. Effects may vary. Please consume responsibly.

FAQ · Distillate

What is cannabis distillate?

Distillate is a highly purified cannabis oil refined until it is mostly one cannabinoid, often 90 to 99 percent THC or CBD. The process removes fats, waxes, and terpenes, so it is nearly flavorless. You will find it in many vapes, edibles, and tinctures.

Does distillate have terpenes?

Plain distillate has had its natural terpenes stripped out during refining, so it is close to odorless and tasteless. Many vape and edible makers add terpenes back afterward for flavor and aroma, so check the label or ask your budtender what was reintroduced.

Why is distillate used in edibles and vapes?

Distillate is already decarboxylated, meaning it is active without extra heating, and its neutral flavor blends easily into foods, drinks, and cartridges. Its high, consistent potency also makes precise dosing simpler for product makers. Effects may vary. Please consume responsibly.
